Summer Camp Registration: 6 Checkout Fixes (Episode 33)

Why families don't finish camp checkout and the six fixes: all-in price, no forced account, phone speed, wallets, waiting lists, payment plans.
Arielle Hammond, Ed.D.

Episode 33 · August 3, 2026 · Solo episode

Families don't finish summer camp registration for six fixable reasons: the full price shows up late, they're forced to create an account first, the form fights their phone, there's no wallet payment, a full week has no working waiting list, and a big camp total has no payment plan. Fix those and more families reach the paid screen.

For those of us without a storefront, registration is the storefront. Camp makes it harder than any other program we sell: several weeks, siblings, medical information, a waiver and a total with a comma in it. "Summer Camp Registration: Why Families Don't Finish Checkout" covers the levers that move the most families with the least work.

How many families abandon camp registration, and why?

Nobody publishes a number for camps, so the best public benchmark is retail checkout. Baymard Institute documents an average cart abandonment rate of 70.22% across 50 studies (baymard.com/lists/cart-abandonment-rate, checked September 17, 2026). If camp behaves anything like that, 100 families click your link and about 30 finish.

Here's what that's worth. Say 100 families click, your week costs $299 and 30 finish: 30 x $299 = $8,970. Get 40 to finish and it's 40 x $299 = $11,960. That's $2,990 more for one week from the same flyers. Put your own numbers in the registration loss calculator.

I wrote up the four leaks I found on real checkouts in why parents abandon registration.

Why do they quit? Mostly surprise costs, forced accounts and length. In Baymard's survey of US shoppers who left during checkout, 40% cited extra costs, 18% a required account, 17% a checkout that was too long or complicated, and 12% not being able to see the total up front (same source). A camp form with two kids and four weeks is long before you add one extra field.

You don't need to be a big brand. A clean checkout, a refund policy they can find and a confirmation that arrives right away are enough to earn a family's trust.

How should I show camp prices and fees?

Show the all-in price on the camp page, before checkout begins. If you charge a one-time materials fee, put it in. If your state taxes it, put that in too. A small fee doesn't create resentment. A fee that appears on the last screen does, because she's done ten minutes of typing on incomplete information.

That's how we built enrops. The price families see first is the price they pay. A $299 camp week shows as $307.97 from the first screen, enrops service fee included, or $304.98 when they pay by bank and save. The rules are on pricing.

Should families have to create an account to register for camp?

No. Let a first-time family register without one. An account is useful once a parent knows she'll be back. Before that it's one more password for a business she hasn't tried yet. Offer the profile. Don't require it.

Returning families are the other half. Know two numbers: how long registration takes a brand-new parent, and how long it takes someone who registered last summer. If the second number is as long as the first, that's your easiest fix. She already gave you her child's birthday once.

How fast should camp checkout be on a phone?

Fast enough to finish in the pickup line. On the episode I gave under two minutes as the target. Time yours, all the way through payment, and find the screen where you get stuck. In our production test, parent checkout on enrops ran from about a minute and a half to four and a half minutes, waiver and payment included.

Turn on wallets. Stripe reports that businesses offering Apple Pay saw an average 22.3% increase in conversion (stripe.com/blog/testing-the-conversion-impact-of-50-plus-global-payment-methods, checked September 17, 2026). A parent who pays with her thumb doesn't go looking for her purse.

Then send a confirmation right away with the full schedule in it. Every summer, parents email to ask whether there's camp on a holiday week. Dates, total paid and a calendar file answer that before she asks.

Do payment plans help fill camp?

Yes. Camp totals get big fast. Two kids in three weeks at $299 is 2 x 3 x $299 = $1,794 in one tap. Across four payments it's $448.50 at a time. When we first offered plans at Journey to STEAM, a real share of families chose them. I wondered how many had been priced out before.

The first term also taught us the operations side. A few cards failed and we had to follow up. So pick a tool that runs the schedule for you. On enrops, you set how many installments and when they fall, with no interest, plan fee or late fee. More in payment plans for camps and classes.

What should happen when a camp week fills?

The next family should get the spot without you touching anything. A week that fills on day one is the best feeling, until you notice twenty families sitting on a list. The fix is a waiting list with a claim window: a spot opens, the next parent is notified, and she has 24 or 48 hours before it moves on.

Count that list, too. Enough names is your sign to open a second section. On enrops, waiting lists are something we set up with our team today.

How do I audit my own camp registration?

Register as a first-time family, on your phone, and check six things.

  1. The all-in price is on the camp page before checkout starts.
  2. A new family can register without creating an account.
  3. The form was built for a phone, and you know your time from first tap to paid.
  4. Apple Pay and Google Pay are on.
  5. A full week has a waiting list that notifies the next family automatically.
  6. There's a payment plan that gets you paid without extra work.

For everything else to set before opening day, use the 9-point camp registration checklist, or see camp registration on enrops.

Who should listen: anyone opening camp registration soon, and anyone who has used the same signup for ten years.

Frequently asked questions

Is it the fee or the surprise that upsets parents?

The surprise. Families pay fees on nearly everything they buy. What they resent is finding out at the end.

Should the camp price I show include sales tax?

If your state taxes your program, show it in the total up front. Rules differ by state, so confirm with your state revenue agency.

What should a camp confirmation email include?

The weeks and times, the location, the total paid, and a person to contact about billing. Send yourself one and check spam.
