How to Offer Payment Plans for Camps and Classes
Updated September 17, 2026
To offer payment plans for a camp or class, decide three things before registration opens: what families pay at checkout, how many installments follow, and the date of the last one. Build the plan into your checkout so the schedule is set the moment a family registers, and publish what happens when a payment is missed.
A full summer of camp is a big number. So is a semester of classes for two kids. Some families pay it in one tap. Some need to spread it out, and "email us about a payment plan" is one more step they don't take.
My mother wouldn't have been able to afford any of these programs. So I always keep little me in mind. A payment plan is one of the simplest ways I know to do that, because it changes when the money arrives and leaves your price alone.
The version most of us run first is a side agreement in a text thread, a note in a spreadsheet, and you as the collections department. This is how to offer installments and skip that job.
What is a payment plan for a camp or class?
A payment plan splits one registration price into a few scheduled payments. The family makes the first payment at checkout and the rest on set dates. The total stays the same as paying in full. What moves is the timing of your cash.
Monthly tuition bills for as long as a kid is enrolled. A plan has an end date, and the end date belongs before your program starts.
Which programs need a payment plan?
The rule I use in the guide to pricing camps and classes: offer a plan on any price a family would feel in one payment. Here is how that plays out at five price points. The family totals include the enrops service fee, which is the same on a plan as it is paying in full.
| Program | Your price | Family pays by card | Plan that fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| One-day workshop | $45 | $46.99 | Pay in full |
| One week of camp | $299 | $307.97 | Pay in full, or 2 payments |
| Semester class | $240 | $247.20 | 2 or 3 payments |
| Multi-week camp | $600 | $614.99 | 3 or 4 payments |
| Full summer of day camp | $1,200 | $1,214.99 | 4 payments |
One more filter: the calendar. A plan needs room to run. If registration opens four months before camp, four payments fit. If it opens three weeks before the first class, two payments fit, or none.
How do I decide the deposit and the schedule?
Three decisions, in this order.
- The first payment. It's collected at checkout, and it does the work of a deposit: it holds the spot and tells you the family is in. Size it against what you spend before day one. Supplies, site fees, the hours you've promised your instructors. If those bills land in May, enough first payments need to land before May.
- The number of installments. Fewer is simpler for you and for the family. Two or three covers most semester classes. Four covers a full summer.
- The last date. Set it so the final installment lands before the program starts. A balance that comes due after the last day of camp is the hardest money to collect.
Then check the plan against your payout timing. If this is your first season on Stripe, Stripe says a first payout is typically scheduled to complete within 7 to 14 days of your first payment (docs.stripe.com/payouts, checked September 16, 2026). Open registration early. The Stripe setup guide lists what to have ready.
How do payment plans work in enrops?
We built enrops because Journey to STEAM needed it first. Journey to STEAM has 75+ school sites and 2,500+ students, 95% of school partners renew, and it runs on enrops. Here is how plans work.
- Installments you set, starting with the first payment at checkout.
- No interest, plan fee or late fee. The total on a plan is the same as paying in full.
- The same enrops service fee as paying in full, split across the installments. It's 3% per registration, minimum $1.99, maximum $14.99 by card, and it's included in the price families see from the first screen. The price families see first is the price they pay. Pay by bank and save: the rate is 2%, maximum $9.99.
- Included on the Free plan. enrops is free for businesses, and you pay enrops $0 per transaction on every plan unless you choose to cover the fee for your families. Your only cost is Stripe's standard processing. Full pricing with worked examples.
- Refunds come from the registration. The enrops service fee is refunded to the family whenever the registration is refunded.
- You set it up yourself. Create the program, set the price, turn on the payment plan and share one link. Signup to a live registration link takes under 5 minutes. See how enrops works.
A worked example. A full summer of day camp at $1,200 shows families $1,214.99 by card, or $1,209.99 when they pay by bank and save. Split evenly across four payments, that's about $304 at a time in place of $1,214.99 at once. Same total. Same fee. A very different decision for the parent looking at it on a phone.
What enrops doesn't do today: monthly autopay tuition that continues all year. A plan covers one registration and it has an end date. If your business bills every month from September to June, keep the tool that runs that, and use enrops for the camps, sessions and semesters that have a start and an end.
What should I tell families about the payment plan?
Tell them before they ask, on the program page and on your flyer. Families read a payment plan for one thing: what will leave my account, and when. Five lines cover it.
- The total, and that the plan total matches paying in full.
- How many payments there are, and the date of the last one.
- That there is no interest, plan fee or late fee.
- What happens when a payment doesn't go through: who reaches out, how many days the family has, and what happens to the spot.
- Your refund policy for a family who withdraws partway through the plan.
Sample wording you can copy and edit:
Pay in full or in 4 installments. The first payment is due at registration and the rest are scheduled before camp begins on June 22. The total is the same either way, with no interest, plan fee or late fee. If a payment doesn't go through, we'll email you and hold your child's spot for 7 days while we sort it out together.
Short. Specific. Kind. The enrops guide for families explains the fee and the plan from the parent's side, so you can link to it and skip writing your own explainer.
What do I do when a payment is missed?
Decide before it happens. The first missed payment is a bad time to invent a policy. A missed installment is often an expired card, a replaced card or a paycheck that lands on Friday. Lead with that assumption.
- Reach out within a day. One friendly message with the amount, the date and a way to fix it.
- Give a set number of days. Pick a number, seven works, and put it in your policy so every family gets the same treatment.
- Decide what happens to the spot. If the balance is still open after that window, your policy says whether the spot is released. Because your last installment lands before the program starts, this gets settled before day one, away from the classroom door.
Then put one recurring check on your calendar: fifteen minutes a week to look for any installment that didn't go through. That's the whole collections department.
Set the plan up before you open registration, so the first family who needs it finds it without asking. Building the form too? Start from the summer camp registration form template, or read enrops for camps and enrops for after-school programs.
Frequently asked questions
Do payment plans cost families more on enrops?
No. A payment plan carries the same enrops service fee as paying in full, split across the installments. There is no interest, plan fee or late fee.
How many installments can I offer?
You decide. Set how many installments there are and when they fall, starting with the first payment at checkout, and put the last one before the program starts.
Is the first installment the same as a deposit?
It does the same work. The first payment is collected at checkout, holds the spot and tells you the family is committed. The remaining payments are scheduled from there.
What happens to the enrops service fee when I refund a family on a plan?
Your own policy decides whether a registration is refunded. On enrops, refunds are issued from the registration, and the enrops service fee is refunded to the family whenever the registration is refunded.
Can I use a payment plan for monthly tuition that runs all year?
No. A plan covers one registration and it has an end date. enrops doesn't run monthly autopay tuition that continues all year today, so keep the tool that handles that and use enrops for programs with a start and an end.
